WILDERNESS LAND NAVIGATION DAY/NIGHT

Navigation is a unique and interesting skill. It is an excellent confidence building exercise and it has proven to save lives. At Unik Skills we provide Land Navigation exercises that will test your ability to navigate by day and night.

This is considered to be an intermediate course implemented to test yourself in a controlled environment. Once you have completed the Map & Compass Fundamentals course, you are ready to attend this Land Navigation course. YOU MUST COMPLETE THE NAVIGATION FUNDAMENTALS PACKAGE TO ATTEND THE LAND NAVIGATION DAY/NIGHT.

During the Land Navigation you will collect various points in a circuit that essentially has you start and finish at the same point. the circuit will consist of collecting 4-6 points in a pre-determined time limit. The time limits vary depending on the level. At Unik Skills we offer various formats to out Land Navigation routes and have structured each route accordingly. We have organized our routes with 3 levels: Basic, Intermediate and Advanced. Our experience provides us with the luxury of assessing you in a professional manner while providing you with the coaching necessary to advance your skills. We are proud to say that our success rate speaks volumes and we will prove it. Our instructors have created several Land Navigation Routes across Ontario. These routes vary from thick dense bush, to open marsh/swamp areas. We also introduce you to routes with trails which prepare you for competitive orienteering methodologies if that may be your goal.

Once you have passed the Day Navigation we test you at Night. We prepare you to navigate using the skills you have perfected by day and immerse you into the challenges of Night Navigation. Again there are different levels and expectations that we ensure are controlled in a safe environment.

The Land Navigation course is guaranteed to provide you with the experience and knowledge to be more proficient in utilizing your Map & Compass to Navigate (Day/Night).

Global Positioning Systems (G.P.S.)

Global Positioning Systems (G.P.S.) are very useful navigational tools. At Unik Skills we believe that the fundamentals of navigation are the most important. It is essential to understand the fundamentals of Navigation and caution to those who rely solely on a GPS to Navigate. We will teach you how to utilize a GPS in conjunction with your navigational skills while introducing the advantages & disadvantages of the GPS.

You will learn:

  • What is a G.P.S?;
  • Understanding the Global Positioning System;
  • The different types of receivers and systems;
  • Setting-up your GPS for different regions;
  • Planning considerations
  • (Multiple use of Waypoints, GPS settings, recording data, route selection, with mobility
  • Technological advantages including introduction to software;
  • Navigation with a G.P.S. in all terrain, by Day & Night;
  • G.P.S. Tracking;
  • Utilizing a G.P.S. in an Urban environment (including automobile & cellular systems); and
  • Trouble-shooting procedures.

Amphibious Navigation

At Unik Skills we have been trained in various capabilities of navigation. For those of you out on the water, we will show you how to Navigate safely to your destination by Day/Night. You will learn how to read charts and compensate for situations out of your control. We teach you how to navigate and what to do if you have no clue where you are. We also teach you how to use lat/long and calculate distances.

Improvised Methods of Navigation

We will teach you what to do when you are lost and do not have any Navigational equipment.

You will be able to recognize basic navigational priorities when the use of ideal equipment is scarce.
